Extraction from finite adjunct clauses: an investigation of relative clause dependencies in Norwegian
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent experiments have confirmed earlier informal evidence that finite adjuncts are not islands categorically. Specifically, it has been shown necessarily for all dependency types (Sprouse et al. 2016), and the island status of an adjunct depends on type clause in question (Kush 2019; Müller Bondevik 2021; Nyvad 2022). The current study further explores these questions by testing three different types: Clauses introduced om ‘if’, fordi ‘because’ når ‘when’, a relative (rc) Norwegian. We find forming rc-dependency into Norwegian overall causes effects, but there fine-grained differences within category ‘adjunct’. we ‘when’ yield large while par with Kobzeva (2022) (2022), yields intermediate results. Rather than relying binary distinctions only, argue any theory is to explain empirical landscape must be sufficiently allow gradient distinctions.

Extraction from relative and embedded interrogative clauses in Danish
In Danish relative clauses and embedded interrogative clauses are not extraction islands. However, there is an asymmetry between the two clauses. In Danish it is possible to extract the subject out of an embedded interrogative clause. Extraction of the subject out of a relative clause, on the other hand, is not allowed. In this paper we present a formal HPSG analysis of extraction in Danish whi...
متن کاملConstructing Filler-Gap Dependencies in Chinese Possessor Relative Clauses
This article explores the construction of filler-gap dependencies in Chinese possessor relative clauses (PRCs), which are different from typical relative clauses (RCs) considered in the literature because Chinese PRCs contain no overt missing arguments (i.e. gaps). As Chinese RCs are prenominal, the gaps precede the head noun fillers. It has been suggested that when the gaps are close to the fi...
متن کاملRelative clause extraction for syntactic simplification
This paper investigates non-destructive simplification, a type of syntactic text simplification which focuses on extracting embedded clauses from structurally complex sentences and rephrasing them without affecting their original meaning. This process reduces the average sentence length and complexity to make text simpler. Although relevant for human readers with low reading skills or language ...
متن کاملRelative clause attachment ambiguity resolution in Persian
The present study seeks to find the way Persian native speakers resolve relative clause attachment ambiguities in sentences containing a complex NP of the type NP of NP followed by a relative clause (RC). Previous off-line studies have found a preference for high attachment in the present study, an on-line technique was used to help identify the nature of this process. Persian speakers were pre...

Of the several African languages that have become regularly offered at U.S. colleges and universities, Swahili consistently garners the highest enrollments, and is the second most widely taught after Arabic, with the greatest variety of instructional materials compared to its Sub-Saharan African counterparts. According to the Modern Language Association, the number of Swahili-language learners ...
